UPDATE: World Health Organization (WHO) Asturias Declaration

At the last Prevent Cancer Now (PCN) Board of Directors meeting, it was agreed PCN would accept and promote the WHO Asturias Declaration on Environmental and Occupational Cancer (see here).

While most of the declaration is in line with PCN views and values, there is one contentious statement:

“However, credible estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO 2009) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC; Straif 2008) suggest that the fraction of global cancer currently attributable to toxic environmental exposures is between 7% and 19%.”

PCN does NOT agree with this statement. PCN believes cancer is caused by a web of interacting factors, including exposures to various substances and various life stages. It is the combination and timing of carcinogenic exposure that is the critical factor in the development of cancer.
