Cancer Prevention Challenge 2009

The Cancer Prevention Challenge is the ONLY fundraiser in Canada that focuses exclusively on primary prevention of cancer – stopping cancer before it starts. Of the half-billion dollars spent in Canada on cancer research each year, less than 2% is devoted to finding the causes - and preventing - cancer. Meanwhile, cancer rates continue to climb – now, nearly half of all Canadian males and close to 40% of females will develop cancer in their lifetime. While cancer is often touted as a disease of the elderly, in 2008, best estimates predict that 30% of new cancer cases and 18% of cancer deaths will occur in young and middle-aged adults ages 20-59. Yet over half of all cancers are environmental, and therefore preventable. Help us raise funds for cancer prevention! Our goal for 2009 is to raise $60,000.

Most of the multi-million dollar ‘cure’ fundraisers in Canada have the funds to set up elaborate events in various parts of Canada, all with very high overheads! The Cancer Prevention Challenge operates a different way: We give you the electronic tools needed to create your own teams and events no matter where you live in Canada, all supported with personal fundraising web pages and automated charitable receipts for donations of $20 or more. We also have a great team of volunteer and part-time staff to help you every step of the way. You can raise funds for cancer prevention by staging dance-a-thons, potluck suppers, poker tourneys, garage sales – whatever motivates you and your friends and colleagues to have fun, and raise money at the same time!

2009 Cancer Prevention Challenge Events

A variety of events will take place across Canada this spring for the Cancer Prevention Challenge. Any organization raising funds for the primary prevention of cancer can participate. Prevent Cancer Now will be organizing a number of events, starting with the Red Mountain Cancer Prevention Challenge on March 21 in Rossland, B.C.
